DOG TRAINING

1:1 Everyday Dog Training

Practical help for everyday life with your dog.

Living with a dog is wonderful, but it isn't always straightforward. Perhaps your puppy is turning your house upside down, your dog pulls you down the road on walks, or you're finding certain behaviours difficult to manage.

Sometimes you just need a little help understanding what's going on and knowing what to do next. That's where our 1:1 training sessions come in.

I've spent many years working with dogs of all breeds, ages and personalities, and one thing I've learnt is that there's rarely a single approach that works for everyone.

Rather than putting you through a set training programme, we'll look at what's happening with your dog, what you'd like to achieve and how we can make everyday life a little easier for you both.

What Can We Work On?

Our sessions cover a wide range of everyday training needs, including:

  • Basic manners and listening skills

  • Loose-lead walking and recall

  • Jumping up and overexcited greetings

  • Settling at home and learning to relax

  • Door manners and managing visitors

  • Meeting people and other dogs

  • Focus and engagement around distractions

  • Impulse control and patience

  • Handling, grooming and cooperative care

  • Puppy training and socialisation

  • Confidence building

  • Understanding canine body language

  • Improving communication between you and your dog

If there's something else you're finding difficult, please get in touch. We can talk through what's happening and whether it's something we can help with.

Understanding Your Dog

Training isn't just about teaching a dog to sit, stay or come when called.

A big part of my approach is helping owners understand what their dogs are trying to tell them.

Dogs communicate constantly through their body language, movements and behaviour. Sometimes the signs are obvious, but often they're much more subtle. When you begin recognising those signals, it's easier to understand why certain behaviours happen and what you can do to help.

I want you to come away from a session not just knowing what to practise, but understanding why we're doing it and how to use those skills in everyday situations. After all, I'm only there for the training session. You're the one living with your dog every day.

Understanding canine communication is something I'm particularly passionate about. I've even written a book, Canine Body Language: A Simple Guide for Dog Owners, to help owners recognise what their dogs are telling them.

Puppy Training

Puppies are wonderful, exhausting and occasionally complete chaos! Those early months are full of learning, for you as much as your puppy.

We can help with toilet training, mouthing, jumping up, settling at home, learning to walk on a lead, recall and getting comfortable with everyday handling. We'll also look at socialisation, which is about much more than meeting lots of dogs and people. It's helping your puppy experience the world without becoming frightened or overwhelmed.

There's no need to rush through everything. We'll concentrate on building good habits, confidence and a positive relationship from the beginning.

Older Dogs & Rescues

You absolutely can teach an old dog new tricks. Whether you've welcomed a rescue dog into your family or you've been living with your companion for years, there's always an opportunity to learn something new.

Some dogs arrive with habits that don't quite fit into their new home. Others may have had difficult experiences or simply haven't been taught certain skills.

We'll work with the dog in front of us, taking their history, confidence and abilities into account.

The aim isn't to change their personality. It's to help you understand each other and make life together more enjoyable.

A Kind, Practical Approach

I don't believe dogs need to be frightened, shouted at or physically punished to learn.

My approach is based on understanding behaviour, clear communication, appropriate rewards and making it easier for dogs to get things right. That doesn't mean letting dogs do whatever they please. Boundaries, consistency and learning good manners are all important. It's about teaching those skills in a way that's fair, achievable and enjoyable for both of you.

And I won't expect you to spend hours every day training. We'll look at how to build practice into the things you already do, whether that's preparing dinner, going for a walk or welcoming visitors into your home.

Training That Fits Your Life

Sessions are arranged around the things you'd actually like help with.

We can work in your home or local area, where suitable, so you can practise the skills in the places you'll be using them.

For example, if your dog pulls on the lead, we can work on your usual walking route. If visitors cause chaos, we can look at what happens when someone comes to your door. You'll have the chance to ask questions, practise with guidance and understand how to continue once the session has finished.

For more challenging behaviours, we may need to work through things gradually over several sessions. We'll discuss that together rather than promising everything can be fixed in an hour.

1:1 Training Prices

Which Session Should I Book?

30 Minutes – £25

Ideal for puppies, a quick refresher or working on one straightforward training skill.

45 Minutes – £34

A good choice for most everyday training needs, allowing time to talk through the problem, demonstrate techniques and practise together.

60 Minutes – £45

Best when you'd like to cover several areas, need more time to discuss your dog's behaviour or want a longer, practical session.

If you're unsure which option to choose, just tell me a little about your dog and what you're hoping to work on. I'll be happy to recommend the most suitable session.

What About More Challenging Behaviour?

Some behaviours need more than everyday obedience training.

If your dog is showing significant fear, aggression, severe reactivity or other behaviours that are affecting their welfare or safety, we'll need to understand the situation before arranging a session.

Depending on the circumstances, we may recommend veterinary advice or support from an appropriately qualified clinical animal behaviourist. I'd always rather be upfront about what I can help with than promise something that isn't realistic.

Let's Make Life With Your Dog a Little Easier

Whether you're starting out with a new puppy, working through a frustrating habit or simply want to understand your companion a little better, we'd love to help.

Tell us a little about your dog and what you're finding difficult, and we'll take it from there.
